Early Detection of Lung Cancer & Mesothelioma In Workers Exposed to Asbestos

Recognizing that patients have more treatment options and are more likely to have better outcomes when cancer is detected at an earlier stage, the goal of this study is to provide a lung cancer screening program to workers exposed to asbestos who are at risk of developing lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma.

In this study, led by Dr. Stephen Lam, Chair of the BC Cancer Agency’s Lung Tumour Group, workers with previous exposure to asbestos receive lung cancer screening using a low dose spiral CT scan of the chest.  As part of the study, participants complete an initial questionnaire to collect socio-demographic, smoking, occupational exposure, and other risk factor data.  Blood specimens are also be collected in order to evaluate the efficacy of biomarkers that may be useful for detecting cancer earlier.

Our hope is that by detecting and diagnosing cancer earlier, we can help save lives. This BC Cancer Agency study is being funded through the BC Cancer Foundation thanks to the efforts of the BC Insulation Contractors Association and Western Canadian Mesothelioma Fund.
